IP addresses - IP address is a number that identifies a computer or another device on the Internet. This is similar to a postal address, which tells where the mail comes from, and where it should be transported. IP addresses typically identify the source and destination of data transmitted with the Internet Protocol.

TCP / IP defines five sections of IP address. Class A, B, C, D, and E, each class has a limit of valid '' IP '' addresses, first determines the value class of octet. The IP address from the first three sections (A, B, and C) can be used for host addresses. The other two classes are used for other purposes (for D multicast and for class E pilot purposes).

The system of IP address classes was developed for the purpose of Internet IP address assignment. Classes created were based on the network size. For example, for a small network with a large number of hosts, Class A was created. Class C was created for several hosts, with fewer hosts.

From Class A to IP address, the first decimal number represents the network portion, while the remaining 24 bits represent the host part. For Class B, the first 16 bits (the first two numbers) represent the network part, while the remaining 16 bits represent the host part. For Class C, the first 24 bits represent the network part, while the remaining 8 bits represent the host part.


10.50.120.7 - Because this is the address of class A, the first number (10) represents the network part, while the rest indicates the host part (50.120.7). This means that to be on the same network of devices, the first number of their IP address should be the same for both devices. In this situation, a device with an IP address of 10.47.8.4 is on the same network as the IP address listed above. The device with IP address 11.5.4.3 is not on the same network, because the first number of its IP address is different.
 

172.16.55.13 - Because this is the address of class B, the first two numbers (172.16) represent the network part, while the remaining address represents the host part (55.13). The device with an IP address of 172.16.254.3 is on the same network, whereas there is no device with an IP address of 172.55.54.74.


IP history
Its development began in 1974, led by computer scientist Bob Kahn and Vint Serf. It is often used in conjunction with the Transmission Control Protocol or TCP. Together they are remembered as TCP / IP.
 
The first major version of the Internet Protocol was version 4, or IPv4. In 1981, it was formally defined by the Internet Engineering Task Force or IETF in RFC 791.

The IPv4 successor is IPv6, which was formally formulated by the IETF in 1998. It was finally designed to replace IPv4. By 2018, IPv6 controls about 20% of all Internet traffic.
